Citizens of Detroit established the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in 1885 to provide an organized arts and cultural presence in their city. Last year, over 677,000 guests visited the museum. They enjoyed selections from a collection of 65,000 artworks that survey human creativity over 6 continents and 8,000 years. Highlights include the first van Gogh painting to enter a US museum and Diego Rivera’s renowned “Detroit Industry” murals. In the 1990s, DIA educators began experimenting with a visitor-centered approach to art interpretation. In 2015, The Wall Street Journal called the DIA the “world’s most visitor-friendly museum.” The DIA’s mission is to create experiences that help each visitor find personal meaning in art.
